How the BP wellness program works

Eligibility

All benefits-eligible employees (excluding retail), non-Medicare eligible retirees/LTD recipients and their covered spouse/domestic partner can participate in the BP wellness programs.

Earning points

If you participated in the HealthPlus or Health+Savings Option in the 2018/2019 plan year, both you and your covered spouse/domestic partner (if applicable) must each have earned 1,000 points in the BP wellness program by December 31, 2018, to maintain eligibility for those options in 2019/2020. You do not have to complete the Health Questionnaire, but you can earn extra points for doing so.

For new enrollees to the plan in the 2018/2019 plan year, you and your covered spouse/domestic partner (if applicable) have no wellness points requirement during that plan year. However, you and your covered spouse/domestic partner must each earn 1,000 points in the 2019/2020 plan year to continue to be eligible for the HealthPlus and Health+Savings Options in 2020/2021.*

Tracking points

As a participant in the BP Medical Plan, you will be invited to take part in many wellness activities. You earn points for healthy behavior, such as preventive screenings, exams and activities such as the BP Million Step Challenge, wellness classes and workshops, with a point value assigned to each.

At any time throughout the year, you can track your points online through the My Points section on the StayWell portal accessible via LifeBenefits. Here you can view your points progress, explore available programs and find ways to move your body in 2019 through the BP wellness program.

Notice regarding wellness program

BP's wellness program is a voluntary wellness program available to all participants in the BP Medical Plan. The program is administered according to federal rules governing wellness programs that seek to improve employee health or prevent disease, including the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act of 2008, and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, as applicable, among others. If you choose to participate in the wellness program, you will have the opportunity to complete the Health Questionnaire. The Health Questionnaire is a voluntary health risk assessment that asks a series of questions about your health-related activities and behaviors and whether you have or had certain medical conditions (e.g., cancer, diabetes, or heart disease). If you participate in the Health+Savings Plan, you will also have the opportunity to complete the physician certification form where you will complete a metabolic screening and measure your blood pressure, HDL cholesterol, triglycerides, fasting blood glucose and waist circumference.

Both of these opportunities are voluntary to you, as is participation in the wellness program overall. However, participants who choose to participate in the wellness program earn points towards your eligibility for the HealthPlus and Health+Savings Plans. As well, if you are in the Health+Savings Plan, although you are not required to complete the physician certification form, only employees who do so will receive the BP contribution to their Health Savings Account.

Additional points-earning opportunities are available throughout the BP wellness program, some of which are health-related. Please refer to the wellness guide for a complete description of each opportunity.  If you are unable due to a medical condition to participate in any of the health-related activities or achieve any of the health outcomes required to earn an incentive, a reasonable accommodation or an alternative standard is available. You may request a reasonable accommodation or an alternative standard by contacting the BP HR & Benefits Center at 1-800-890-4100.

The information from the Health Questionnaire and from your physician certification form will be used to provide you with information to help you understand your current health and potential risks, and may also be used in partnership with a StayWell health advisor to design wellness activities that suit you specifically. You also are encouraged to share your results or concerns with your own doctor.

Protections from disclosure of medical information

As further described in the Plan's summary plan description, the BP Medical Plan is required by law to maintain the privacy and security of your personally identifiable health information. Although the wellness program coordinator and BP's Benefits team may use aggregate information it collects to design a program based on identified health risks, the BP Medical Plan will never disclose any of your personal information either publicly or to the employer, except as necessary to respond to a request from you for a reasonable accommodation needed to participate in the wellness program, or as expressly permitted by law. Medical information that personally identifies you that is provided in connection with the wellness program will not be provided to your supervisors or managers and may never be used to make decisions regarding your employment.

Your health information will not be sold, exchanged, transferred, or otherwise disclosed except to the extent permitted by law to carry out specific activities related to the wellness program, and you will not be asked or required to waive the confidentiality of your health information as a condition of participating in the wellness program or receiving an incentive. Anyone who receives your information for purposes of providing you services as part of the wellness program will abide by the same confidentiality requirements. The only individual(s) who will receive your personally identifiable health information from the BP wellness program are Alight, StayWell, Livongo, approved members of the BP Benefits department and Aetna, and all done in order to provide you with services under the wellness program.

In addition, all personally identifiable medical information obtained by BP Benefits through the wellness program will be maintained wholly separate from your personnel records, information stored electronically will be encrypted, and no information you provide as part of the wellness program will be used in making any employment decision. Appropriate precautions will be taken to avoid any data breach, and in the event a data breach occurs involving information you provide in connection with the wellness program, we will notify you in accordance with applicable law.

You may not be discriminated against in employment because of the medical information you provide as part of participating in the wellness program, nor may you be subjected to retaliation if you choose not to participate.

* Employees hired on or after January 1, 2019, as well as employees on international assignment, are encouraged — but not required — to participate in wellness activities to earn 1,000 points in 2019.

** Only benefits-enrolled active employees and their covered spouses/domestic partners are eligible for prize incentives such as the $100 gift card for earning 2,000 or 3,000 wellness points, BP discounted activity devices and Million Step Challenge prizes, etc.
